Ebay Craze: Used Clothes, Quick Cash

By , May 21, 2012

AMARILLO, TX. — Amarillo shopper Gretchen Anthonys romance with thrift store shopping and selling items on Ebay began 7 years ago, and this side business has grown! Now this thrify lady is making out of season in-style.

We live in a generation where we value instant food, short words and quick cash, and Amarillos Gretchen Anthony has all her bases covered.

Shes a master of a different sort.

For her, N-W-T stands for New With Tags. And E-U-C stands for Excellent Used Condition.
These acronyms are just a few terms in the language she speaks.

Selling stuff on Ebay is trial and error. There are definitely techniques I use, Gretchen says.

Her motivation...

media ‘hooks’ to get your business noticed

By , May 20, 2012

(MoneyWatch) Everybody tells you positive publicity is great for your business, but few people tell you how to get it. The cost of free publicity is great ideas.

In a previous post, I covered a dozen publicity hooks for attracting media attention to your products and services. Because a sequel needs to try harder to be as good as the original (think Godfather II and try to forget Jaws 3-D), here are 15 more hooks to promote your business:

The news event hook. Tie your company to a news event. For instance, Heritage Dairy Stores raised money to purchase calling cards for US soldiers in Iraq so they could call home more often.

The insider advice hook. Research...

May Day Media Mayhem

By , May 20, 2012

Media hypocrisy about the Occupy Wall Street movement is old news. But the New York Times hit the refresh button once again with its coverage of the May Day demonstrations in New York and around the country on May 2. And it is supposedly the last serious newspaper with a liberal bent left standing. Nonetheless, the Times has always focused on confrontation, bloodshed, arrests and mayhem in covering Occupy, while paying scant heed to civic substance or political significance.

No surprise, then, that on May 2, following a successful, multifaceted systematically nonviolent reemergence of Occupy as a force of American conscience on issues of inequality, money-tainted politics and economic...

OPINION SHAPER: Friendships can be tended in Las Vegas

I recently walked on the wild side, and my legs are still a bit wobbly from the experience.

For this suburbanite, the wild side lies along the Las Vegas Strip, a massive and glittering playground for adults, and one that is perfect for enhancing camaraderie. In this desert environment, tall buildings bloom where prickly cacti once grew and Wile E. Coyote chased The Road Runner beneath the moon and the stars. Now a myriad of man-made lights obscure those same celestial bodies.

With Mother Natures heavenly cues hidden, day and night blend, shifting the body clock into overdrive. Time no longer dictates sleep; it comes when exhaustion overwhelms and puffy blisters appear on the feet.

If...

High School: New Sports Book For Athletes, Parents, and Coaches: “Becoming a …

It’s surreal how a simple conversation between sports parents about sports, success, and kids can spark an idea that evolves to the point of a published work. After eight long years of work, writing, queries, waiting…more work, more writing, more queries and more waiting…etc., Becoming a True Champion (#BATC) has been published.

No more, “Hey, how is the book coming?” (with some likely thinking “it will never happen”) and having to answer, “still working on that,” as publisher Rowman amp; Littlefield has released the book one month earlier than its target date. Finally, a dream turns into a reality, that’s a good feeling.

I’d...

ALTON – A day care center that has served at least two generations of children over the last 33 years will close May 25 after its final Friendship Day, graduation ceremony and picnic.

The friendships have been major. Children have been friends since they were two (years old) and have been in each others weddings, said 22-year employee Paula Herter, who has been director of Beltline Christian Daycare, 310 Oakwood Road, for 12 years.

It is something we really fostered, relationships and friendships, said the Rev. Matthew Prince of the adjacent Beltline Christian Center. Our Christmas program every year was very big. They would practice for months.

How Al Qaeda rated the American media — an ‘F’ for Fox

Fox News “falls into the abyss as you know, and lacks neutrality too.”

CNN “seems to be in cooperation with the government more than others.”

And “ABC channel is all right; actually it could be one of the best channels, as far as we are concerned.”

That was how an Al Qaedaoperative rated several American TV news outlets as the terrorist group weighed how to get its message out for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, according to documents made public today.

In one of 17 notes and letters released by the Combating Terrorism Center at the US Military Academy at West Point, Osama Bin Laden appeared to ask for suggestions...
